
Step 2: Encounter and Engagement (What Do I See?)
Once you begin to examine a text, the next step is to figure out exactly what you are being shown. Don’t concern yourself with interpreting these details. Focus instead on giving an accurate depiction of all of the key elements that are visible in the photograph. This establishes the foundation for then examining and analyzing the text in greater detail. To get this work underway, here are some aspects and/or elements of the photo you might consider focusing on:
- What is presented in the foreground vs what is presented in the background
- What is depicted in clear focus and what is depicted out-of-focus
- The relationship between the visual elements and the written text
- The interplay between light and dark
- Facial expressions
- How the viewer’s eye moves across the photograph
