In order to describe a text’s “main elements or features,” you first need to identify what these “elements or features” are. This requires paying close attention to the important details a text includes. Paying attention is not a neutral exercise. Whenever you pay attention, you need to take note not only of what you see, but also how you see. How do you decide what does or does not count as a “main” element? Why do particular elements attract more of your attention than others? And how do these patterns of noticing and not noticing shape your view of the text overall?
